I am new to Solidworks and have the following query:

Assume I create a part and then create a number of different configurations of that part. If a colleague subsequently opens one of the configurations, how does he know that he has opened a configured part and not a stand-alone part?

The reason I think this matters is that my colleague could potentially change both the configuration he has open and the default configuration, without realising that he has changed the default.

If someone has used the default configuration in an assembly, that assembly could be adversely affected by that unexpected change.

I believe it is bad practice to use the default configuration in an assembly, but bad practice does happen.

What I would like is for SW to inform my colleague that he is modifying a configured part, before he saves his changes.

Is that possible? Is it done as standard, but I have simply failed to notice?
