How do you Correctly Define 'Initial Conditions' for a nonlinear dynamic analysis?

I am trying to use the 'initial Condition' feature of simulation correctly; but I cannot find ANY literature on it and how it is applied to the model.  I see (3) options; displacement, velocity, and acceleration.

I'm guessing that:

1) displacement is equivalent a physical gap in a model; (i.e., in a drop analysis, the use of the initial condition 'displacement'  will result in the exact same results and take the same amount of time to solve as a model that is physically drawn with the same drop distance).  Therefore if gravity is not specified; nothing will happen (assuming no other bodies are in motion)

2) Velocity is applied as a load curve where you have an 'Initial velocity' at time '0 seconds' and a velocity of '0' at '1 second'

3) Acceleration is applied as a load curve where you have an "initial acceleration' at time '0' seconds and an acceleration of '0' at '1 second'

Did I 'guess' correctly?  if so; is it possible to modify the initial conditions to have a custom load curve? (i.e. tell simulation that an object will have a constant velocity of 100 m/sec?)

Thank you
