If you have a template that accesses a master file (like a word document) how do you handle updating the master file?  For instance, if you transitioned the master file from release to editing, made changes, checked it in over a period of time the problem could be that if it sits around for a while and someone runs the template then the edited but unchecked version would be used.

Another option could be to copy the file then edit.  When ever this is finished then you would transition the master file and save the working version over it.

Curious to see how other people handle this.
