Hobbing

Is there an easy way to model the hobbed part of a shaft?  I figured out how to Swept cut using a helix...but right now its not terminating properly. Is there a way to have the first inch of hobbing be the same diameter and then have the termination of the hobbing be a radial cut like it would in real life?  What's the best way to do this?
