How do you all do detailed drawings of an assembly?

I have always taken the final assembly and used "Hide/Show Component" to hide components so that the assembly is additive as the drawing packet advances. The pain with this is that I spend a lot of time hiding assembly components in the drawing. I have a macro that hides components but it's sketchy and will sometimes hide things I don't want hidden in addition to the component that I wanted to hide.

I have tried using assembly configurations and display states in the past to mixed success. Hiding the components is much faster but if any of the extra configs and states get deleted from the assembly your drawings are trashed.
