Hidden Solid & Surface Bodies Causing Lag.

Hi all,

I have a question that's been nagging for a while, finally got around to asking:

I have dummy object I've imported from a sub-d modeling package (3DS Max) as an STL file-- it's of a human arm; very high-poly-- that I've used for geometric reference.  I have the object hidden, yet it seems like almost every time I move the camera, brush the cursor over the feature tree, etc., the wireframe of the hidden object appears for a minute, then disappears. And while this "ghosting" occurs, nothing else is possible. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but given the high-poly nature of the dummy object, it takes a solid 45 seconds each time this happens, despite the fact that the object is completely hidden.

Is there a way to turn this feature off? Running SW2013...
