"Exploding" Weldments/Creating SplitAssemblies

I am not sure if this is the proper forum.

We are making some changes at our company and are no longer using weldments in SolidWorks. We are converting all of our weldments to assemblies by making split assemblies. However, I ran into major issues once I had finished my assembly and new drawing and had deleted the original weldment. I lost all of my split bodies! I did notice that the split bodies still refer back to the original weldment... does this mean that we can never get rid of those weldments? I admit we are creating our assemblies in this way in an effort to make this transition as quick as possible, but if it won't actually work once the weldments are gone, it is not that much quicker!

I have tried to look up more information on how split assemblies work, if the split bodies will always rely on their original weldment, but I have found nothing.

Thank you in advance!
