Potential finger trouble with Excel BoM in drawing Solidworks 2024 SP5.

The SW help states that if you have 'Automatic update of BoM' in Document properties inactive and also 'Row numbers follow assembly ordering' that one can override the item numbers from within excel. 

 I cannot ge this to function as stated - If I open the drawing BoM in excel and override item numbers then close the spreadhseet the overriddes do not get pushed back to the BoM table shown on the drawing.   When I reopen the BoM table in excel I witness the previously overriden item reverting to those shown in the drawing BoM!

If I access the BoM table properties and select the Contents tab I can override the item numbers there but there doesn't seem to be the ability to override en-masse as one could do in excel:

 Is there something fundemental to the workflow that I am overlooking or is the help out of date?
