If I put a flat pattern into a drawing, my default state disappears.  You can still highlight lines but they are invisible. I have checked the properties and made sure I was using the correct configuration. The view is visible once again if I change all the drawing views to the same configuration.  This is a new one to me as it has never done this to me until now.
