I searched the web thoroughly and the solidoworks online guide. Could'nt find anything related to dimension cosmetic threads.
Below you find an image, assembly on the left, part on the right. They are on the same drawing.
The part is a disk with a cosmetic thread on in, the assembly is composed of one part only, the same disk.
A cosmetic thread may be dimensioned in the three manners:
Left click on cosmetic thread diameter (1)
Left click on both cosmetic thread sides (2)
Right click -> insert callout (3)
In case 1, it's a dimension on minor thread diameter, while in case 2, it's a dimension on major thread diameter. In case 3, a note is created.
Now, case 2 for assemblies show "Could not create reference dimension from current set of selected items". Works fine for parts.
Up until upgrading to Solidworks 2025 SP5 (we had Solidowkrs 2025 SP2, and Solidworks 2022 before), I could dimension cosmetic threads as in case 2, clicking both sides of the cosmetic thread and dimensioning on the thread major diameter. We have more or less 13000 drawings in this manner (example below: it's an old assembly on a new, blank default drawing, suggesting drawing document propeerties are not the problem).
The questions:
What has changed so that I cannot dimension cosmetic threads like case 2 anymore in assemblies? It is still possible for parts.
What am getting wrong? The only way I found as to be consistent is manually overwriting
Thank you for your time and attention,
Rob
