Custom Appearances, Decals and Scenes in Core Solidworks 2011

In SolidWorks 2011 users now have the ability to save custom appearances, decals and scenes. This used to be functionality only available to PhotoWorks users but now it is available to all SolidWorks users. In the appearance, decal or scene property manager you will see a button to save the appearance, decal or scene. This allows you to save a custom appearance, decal or scene so that it can be reused later.

The recommended workflow for creating a custom appearance, decal or scene is:

  1. Find the appearance, decal or scene that is closest to the one you want to create.
  2. Apply this closest appearance, decal or scene to the model
  3. While editing the appearance make the customizations that you need.
  4. Finally save this customized appearance, decal or scene to a folder that you specify.

An example would be creating a custom red textured plastic that is similar to PW-MT11000 (except it is red). To create the custom appearance:

  1. Apply the PW-MT11000 appearance to the model (in some cases you must hold the ALT key down to see the PropertyManager for the appearance)
  2. In the PropertyManager change the color to be red.
  3. You will see the change in the SolidWorks Graphics Window (also in the PhotoView 360 preview window if you are using PhotoView 360).
  4. Once you verify that you have made the correct change, press save.
  5. Select the folder to which you want the appearance to be saved and that folder will appear in the appearance pane under the list of default appearances (custom folders are blue).

Note if you put the folder on a network other users can access it as well. You can manage the folders in which you custom folders are stored using Tools -> Options -> System Options -> File Locations. You will see items for custom appearances, decals and scenes in the “Show folders for:” drop down.
