Creating different Boundaries on a surface

Hello all,

I am new to this forum so please bear with me as I become accustomed to this forum,

I am trying to figure out how to create different boundaries on a surface. I am working on a fun little optical stimulation graphic for my project. I have created a toroid/donut shape by sweeping a circle around a path created in a normal plane. Now I want to cut the surface of the toroid into different boundaries/pieces. Like I want to have the slices kind of curl around the toroid at an angle off center to the toroid to create a whirling/swirling effect around the toroid with every other boundary/piece white while the others are black as to create this whirling effect. Does anyone know how to "cut" a sweep into different boundaries/pieces?

Thanks so much for your help with this little project. I really appreciate it.

Stephen
