Convert .OBJ, .PLY or .STL to .STEP or .PRT

Hi everyone.  I just bought a CR-Scan Otter to help me with reverse-engineering parts and making customized things for various items.  The Otter gives me completed scans in one of 3 file formats: .OBJ, .PLY or .STEP

I've never had any success in Solidworks importing a .STL file and converting it to anything else (had limited success in Spaceclaim years ago doing this, but no longer use the software).

Does anyone know a fairly simple workaround for converting scanned objects into a .STEP or .PRT file where features are recognized and created, so they can later be edited and customized?

If not, what other work-around do you use to recreate the object from a scan in Solidworks from the mesh file?  This side of solidworks is all new to me.  I'm just a CSWA at the moment.  Thank you for your help!  😊
