Big problem with our SolidWorks files

OK people, for the past few years I have been making lots of SolidWorks models, assemblies and drawings.  No naming scheme was ever set up and no set way of managing the data was created.  Regular folders and Windows Explorer were what was used to manage the data.  We were so busy that we never really had a chance to do this properly.

I need to get everything sorted out for my boss so that he can easily find what he needs as I am leaving and someone else will be taking my position.  What is the best way to rename, organize and make sure references and data does not get broken or misplaced.  There is about 7 gigs worth of stuff here and seems very overwhelming.

All the files are on 1 PC's hard drive and only edited from there.  My boss will copy/open a part or assembly up from his PC every once in awhile, but I do all the editing on the PC with the files stored on it.

We continually have problems with references being broken and files not being able to be found.  I can usually fix it because I have an idea where things are.  Once I leave the new guy and my boss will be left taking shots in the dark.  I want to avoid this as much as possible.

The cheaper the solution the better, but I may be able to pitch a working quick and easy solution that costs some money.

Thanks in advance for any information!
