2017 Splines Lesson

Hi All,

I’ve completed a draft of a modified Splines lesson.  It would be awesome if some of you had a bit of time to take a look at it and offer up some feedback.

Here are some highlights of changes:

  • The Guitar Body is now the example file used for introducing the standard spline.
  • Information regarding the spline handles has been divided.
    • 1st spline handle basics are introduced during the workflow step of adding spline relations
    • Then for the workflow step of changing the shape of the spline, information about manipulating the spline handles is discussed.
  • Information regarding Evaluating Curvature Combs has been divided.
    • In the Guitar Body example, the discussion focuses on using the combs to evaluate how smooth the curve is.
    • The discussion on continuity has been included with the 2 point spline example.
  • The Guitar Body example includes steps for using Spline Parameters to Reset a Handle and deactivate a handle.
  • The Guitar Body also includes a step to add a spline point.
  • The Fleur-de-lis has been moved to the end of the lesson and is only used to demonstrate the Sketch Picture tool.
    • My plan is to re-write the remainder of the example for the first exercise in the lesson. This way, as an instructor, you could easily choose to demo some or all of the splines for the students.  Additionally, this provides a consistent workflow to the exercises as was seen in the lesson – the first exercise will use standard splines to trace an image (Fleur-de-lis), just like the first spline case study (Guitar Body).

I think by focusing on all the different spline types first improves the flow of the lesson, but I’d be interested to hear others’ opinions!

I've attached a pdf of the lesson draft and also a zip file of the Case Study files.

Thanks,

Rebekah
