How should I model an injection molded part with inserts in the MBOM / MID?

I have an item that is an injection molded piece of plastic with a number of threaded inserts. (see close up image below).

The threaded inserts are mounted into the injection molding die in place, and then the plastic is injected. So the plastic shape never exists on its own.

The EBOM is a Physical Product with a number of instances of each threaded insert type, as well as an instance of a 3D Part that holds the geometry for the plastic.

If useful, assume the plastic part weighs 70g by itself (in case you want to include a continuous provided material in the structure.

I'd love to hear best practices and recommendations on how to model this within the MBOM / MID.

  • Is this best represented as a Manufacturing Assembly, a Manufactured Part, or something else?
  • Should I make the 3D Part for the plastic "not manufacturable procurable", considering it never exists by itself?
  • Does the plastic part get its own MID item, or is that not necessary?

Thanks for your inputs

(I feel like I did a fairly thorough search through the user guide, 3D Swym, and beyond for info on this, but if there are other reference materials that I missed that explain this, please feel free to share a link, too)
