New Tool available: Finding Orthologs

Name: Ortholog Analysis

Authors: Pedro M. Gomez-Fabre, Hon Q TranOrthologs_Three genomes.png and Paul M. Selzer

Version: 1.2.1

Created: June 2011

Purpose: Here we present a tool that can calculate and display orthologous genes. Orthologs can be defined as genes tha t have diverged during speciation event (Fitch, 1970). Another way to define them might be as "same  genes" in different organisms.

Finding orthologs by reciprocal best hits (RBH) is one of the common approaches to identify orthologous pairs. Orthologs  can be used to annotate new organisms, identify potential drug targets or find out which genes are shared amongst two or more genomes.

This application allows the end user submit their genome of interest and produce results without the need of waiting for existing genome comparison tools to update their databases. The resulting findings can be visualised and drilled down as well as selecting and exporting your genes of  interest.
