Hi 3DEXPERIENCE Edu Students Community - I'm excited to share my #POTY2020 entry now as a 3DEXCITE Creative Experience! You can find out more about the project, its creation process and extra visual assets below:
Description:
The aim of this project was to ideate and design an end-effector that would exceed at general purpose tasking. The project took the novel approach of using both suction and traditional grasping to achieve this over using either exclusively. The design sought to identify five areas which could be optimised to help the suction and grasping synergy excel in a general purpose grasping situation such as bin-picking in a warehouse. The Creative Experience created intends to demonstrate these five areas through interactive storytelling. This project was originally submitted for #POTY2020 and more info about its origins can be found there: https://academy.3ds.com/en/projects/hybrid-grasping-and-suction-end-effector
Creative Process:
The ideation and design process took in total 6 months of on-and-off work, this was mostly a mix of reviewing existing designs, literature and prototyping in CATIA. During which I often used 3DEXPERIENCE Edu for educational resources which allowed me to learn advanced concepts in CATIA and learn from other's projects.
The largest hurdle to overcome was the designs compactness. As the design tried to mimic the nimbleness of a human hand its dimension had to reflect that of a hand as well. Consequently, the design was very intricate and often had small tolerances, this meant more precise design and manufacturing techniques. The personal upside to this was the depth to which I was able to learn some of the more advanced design tools in CATIA. Ultimately, the project provided a great way for me to learn more about a field of robotics I'm keenly interested in and exercise my design skills.
