What do you guys think of flattened surfaces?

I have to admit, I was more excited about this as a bone to throw to the NEWBs who post discussions with the topic: "I modelled trombone, how do I flatten it?" than I am about the uses I'll find for it in my job.  I looked it over and generally can see how it might be useful to someone doing fabric patterns or making decorative objects, from stamped metal but I expect the tool and die people to weigh in soon and say it's not a substitute for Blankworks since it doesn't support internal loops and doesn't have physical properties for specific materials or thicknesses and doesn't incorporate mechanical forces.

Even so, it's one of those tools that will assert itself as an application at an unlikely time, like if you wanted to:

  • lay out the graphics for a vynyl wrap, you could use this to create a template that you could import into Illustrator
  • show an label in a flattened state for an exploded view in SolidWorks or Composer

What do you generally think are good applications for this tool?
