First off, I'm not suggesting we open source SW itself- but there's precedent for software companies to open source some in-house developed tool to the wider development community. For example, Google, Facebook and Twitter each have accounts on the popular code sharing site Github. In our particular market, Autodesk has one as well.
This would give us new opportunities to interact with developers. Some developers really like to improve open source projects and add enhancements. We could benefit from this internally, but developers may also come up with something completely innovative based on something we've released which could encourage innovation in the 3D design space.
This could also attract development talent to us; this is what Google and Facebook seem to be attempting to do with their opensourced releases of TensorFlow and Big Sur respectively. By giving outside developers an interesting tool to play with, they might want to come work for us.
