What you think would be the best workflow for showing a part and having a drawing for the different stages of machining?

1.Separate 3D and Drawing files for each stage

2.One 3D with configurations and separate drawing files

3.One 3D with configurations and multi-sheet drawing

or.......?

Is it possible to automate the process of creating these stages for similar parts(flanges, shafts, etc.) or this is too complicated?
