I am trying to make the below part. 

My first idea was to extrude a solid cylinder. From there, my plan was to use a bunch of extrude cuts to create the stepped profile. I was able to create the first "step" but the second one failed for some reason related to intersecting curves. 

Thinking about it some more, it appears that I should use revolved cut or swept cut.
