I am researching a customer need related to reverse engineering. Specifically, customers have asked for the ability to compare a SOLIDWORKS model to a mesh model where the SOLIDWORKS model was made to recreate or reverse engineer the mesh model. Note, the source of the mesh model may be output from freeform modeling software, output from a scanner, a low resolution export from another CAD system, a download from an online file sharing site, output from topology optimization, output from simulation, etc... Note that by “mesh model” we are referring to *.stl, *.obj, *.vrml, *.off, *.ply, *.3mf, etc… files where the geometry is tessellated commonly using a series of triangles.
