I've been playing with a free laser scanning program thatworks by the user simply setting up a web cam and then recording avideo of the user waving a laser plane over the object. The laserhas a simple line generator optic as used in laser levelers. Italso calibrates itself against a special pattern background image.

The nature of the David laser scanner set-up makes it impracticalfor larger items. In my case, I am wanting to scan some machineryabout the size of a small car.
I've seen plenty of other similar programs done by college studentsthat don't use the targets, but rather depends on a known geometricrelationship with the laser and camera. But, again they normallyare used on a small scale. In my case, I don't have control of theenvironment, so lighting won't be ideal. So, I am uncertain thelow-cost approach will work in this situation.
Anyone here ever try this type of work at the larger scales, perhaps in a factory environment?
