Dassault Systèmes - Electromagnetics Focus Application: Electro-Thermal Co-Simulation - Advanced Seminar

SIMULIA’s own Frank Scharf, SIMULIA Technical Sales Director, presented at the 2026 SIMULIA Americas Users Conference

Abstract:

The performance of electronic devices is evermore increasing, which can also lead to increased heat generation. This heat needs to be controlled to protect the electronics from damage, and even more importantly, to make a device safe to handle. To tackle this challenge, simulating the thermal behavior (including convection, conduction, and radiation) of the device is a crucial step in the design process. Since the heat is generated by electronic components, and material properties can often vary with temperature, a coupled simulation is usually required. In this talk we will demonstrate a typical workflow for this type of simulation.

Frank Scharf

SIMULIA Technical Sales Director - Dassault Systèmes

Frank obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum, Germany, in 2008. During his graduate studies, he focused on modeling and simulating the plasma sheath in high intensity discharge lamps. After graduating, Frank joined Computer Simulation Technology (CST), which was subsequently acquired by Dassault Systèmes in 2016 and is now part of the SIMULIA brand. Frank worked in a number of technical presales roles and currently leads the global electromagnetics team within the SIMULIA Industry Process Consulting organization.
