When working with simulations in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, analyzing raw results is only part of the story. To truly understand performance, we often need to derive custom quantities from simulation outputs. That’s where Field Expressions come into play.
What are Field Expressions?
Field Expressions allow you to create custom field data for visualization. You can define them as mathematical expressions referencing regular result fields (stress, strain, displacement, etc.) or even other field expressions.
The Field Expression Manager is where this happens:
- It lets you enter and manage expressions directly.
- It automatically validates your syntax.
- If there are errors, it issues warnings and troubleshooting guidance, ensuring that your expressions are both correct and efficient.
When you first open the Field Expression Manager, you’ll see the default (empty) settings—a clean slate ready for your custom definitions.
Why use Field Expressions?
- Derive advanced metrics like von Mises stress, strain energy density, plastic strain ratios, or failure criteria.
- Combine multiple outputs (e.g., stress + displacement) into a single result field.
- Automate repetitive calculations across design iterations.
