GHG2 Certification for Class 8 Trucks Using SIMULIA Cloud

MODSIM PowerFLOW

Please join us as Raja Sengupta, Bhargav Sowmianarayanan and I present at the Global 3DEXPERIENCE Modeling & Simulation Virtual Conference, on November 17.

My presentation:

As a manufacturer of Heavy Duty vehicles, Volvo Trucks North America has to certify all highway tractors sold in the US under recent regulations issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with regard to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel economy standards for heavy-duty trucks. GHG Phase 2 standards covering both vehicle and engine performance were finalized by the EPA in 2016 with planned implementation from 2021 for vehicle model years 2021-2027. The aerodynamic bin structure laid out in these regulations is used to classify any given vehicle configuration into its appropriate bin based on its drag area (CdA) as obtained by a certified evaluation method. Volvo chose to use CFD (specifically, SIMULIA PowerFLOW) as its alternate method.

However, the diverse portfolio of products, along with wide variations in customer specifications, necessitated a very large number of simulations. This was accomplished in a reasonable timeframe by leveraging the scalability and flexibility of SIMULIA Cloud to automate and drive 2000+ PowerFLOW simulations. In addition, to quantify the compliance risk from physical truck build variation, a characterization study was carried out using the Optimization tools offered within SIMULIA.
