Presentation:
Fiber-reinforced composites are employed in a wide array of sectors due to their diverse properties. They remain, however, difficult to employ since their behavior is more complex than those of homogenous materials. In the context of long fiber-reinforced plastics different types of failures can occur in the material, which can be classified into intralaminar and interlaminar failures. The prevention of failure requires the study of the different failure mechanisms as well as their complex interaction. Here a wind turbine rotorblade section, as a demonstration, is analyzed for failure with SIMULIA Abaqus in order to give an overview of the capabilities of the software regarding composite materials. A margin of safety is calculated and the material and weight of the rotorblade is reduced by means of several analyses while still meeting safety requirements. Finally, as an abstract example, draping simulations are employed on the rotorblade geometry in order to determine the variation of stresses from the initial shear strain in the ply.
