🎬 Making Maxton's Bedroom Furniture: Part 4

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the final part of the MAKING phase in my creative design process. 🎬 The video below covers the last few steps of building my son Maxton’s custom bedroom furniture! 🎬

After finishing the cabinets and all six drawers, it was time to tackle the shelving towers and the cross-bridge shelf that will go over Maxton’s bed. Max was eager to help with cutting the boards, which made the process even more fun!

Having SOLIDWORKS open and nearby was a huge help—I kept double-checking measurements to make sure everything stayed precise.

Together, we sanded each board on both sides, prepping the surfaces for a smooth, high-quality paint finish. I reminded Max that a good paint job always starts with a well-prepped surface, and he jumped right into priming and painting. I like to get a first coat done on everything before assembly, which definitely helps streamline the final touches.

Mocking up the cross-bridge shelf on my own was at little tricky since Maxton was at school, (Insert Dad joke here... so I had to really use my head on this one.)

For the trim pieces, I applied a touch of wood glue and secured them with a nail gun—which was, of course, the highlight of the assembly! BANG BANG BANG!!!!  I didn’t use wood glue on any of the five major sections.  This will allow me to easily break everything down and reassemble once I get everything upstairs.

Before bringing everything into the room, Eme and I gave the walls a fresh coat of paint. She painted everything down low and I painted everything high!

The entire unit went back together in 5 separate sections.  I also secured the unit to the studs and added some final trim pieces. Getting everything assembled upstairs was surprisingly smooth—aside from a close encounter with some sharp drawer slide rails! Those slide rails definitely gave me a run for my money, but it all came together in the end.

This project turned out incredible! By following my creative design process, I brought it to life—from a quick concept sketch to a 3D model and finally to a real-life creation. I am thrilled to be able to share my passion for design and building with my son.  Projects like this only fuel my motivation to take on even more.

I am so glad I took the time to use Home By Me.  It was so awesome to quickly model up Maxton’s room and drop in furniture and quickly layout the room.  This helped my design process and solidify my concepts.

Maxton was absolutely thrilled with his new room! This project was not only fun and challenging, but it also introduced me to a whole new world of woodworking.  I’ve got plenty of ideas for new projects and my family has the requests rolling in! LOL!

Most importantly, I was able to share something valuable with Maxton: if you really want something bad enough, you just have to find a way to MAKE it!

Thanks for following along on this journey! See you all for my next project!
