Inspired by a piece of high-tech material used in one of @CO daily endangered species shorts, this week, we designed and made an art palette for painting with water.
When searching for an alternative to fabric bath mats, we found this material called Diatomite. It's initially super absorbent, and then causes water to rapidly evaporate off of it. It's truly amazing stuff. When we bought our bath mat, it also came with four coaster sized pieces, so we thought it'd be fun to transform one of them into a canvas for painting with water!
We used xDesign on a tablet to draw the initial shape of the palette as well as the pocket for the coaster.
Then we transformed a rock into a bowl! We used a clever hack to figure out the shape of the rock's cross-section and inserted a picture of it into xDesign to cut a uniquely shaped, matching pocket.
Feel free to grab this 3DXML of the palette if you'd like to customize it and make it your own:
