Floating Frames for Large Canvas Sizes

A floater (or floating) frame is a type of picture frame designed to create the illusion that the artwork is floating within the frame.

It achieves this by leaving a small gap of ¼" between the frame and the artwork. This gap allows the artwork to be seen in its entirety, without the edges being obscured by the frame, giving the impression that the art is suspended within the frame.

The minimal and subtle nature of the frame, with its small gap, allows the artwork to be the focal point without being overshadowed by the frame itself.

The problem? They are very expensive if you need to order them to fit your artwork. Fortunately, we have 3D Printers!:)

The challenge in designing a floater frame that is much larger than the build plate is designing the fastening solution to seamlessly align the various pieces. The frames being very slim makes concealing the clips even harder.

Long story short, SOLIDWORKS was the perfect tool to facilitate designing such large frames wit delicate but strong fastening features. No glue is needed!
