1860s Ball Gown

*Update* (3/23/2020) I finally wore it! Here's what the dress looks like on me instead of a mannequin:

Original Post:

Hi everyone! I've been procrastinating on this project for about five years, and it's finally done! I made an 1860s evening/ball gown out of teal satin and silver satin ribbon. The foundations of the ensemble include a chemise, drawers, corset, and hoop skirt, (petticoat forthcoming, maybe) all made by me. I only have pictures of the most recent development (the bodice and finished gown) because of my extended procrastination. Both hand and  machine stitching techniques were used. The bodice was completely made in the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab at the Waltham campus, the rest was made at home. Hope you like it!

Materials:

Gown:

  • teal satin fashion fabric
  • white cotton lining
  • white denim interfacing
  • silver satin ribbon (5/8" and 1" widths)
  • cotton thread in matching colors (teal and white)
  • 1/4" spring steel bones
  • silver hooks and eyes
  • teal lacing
  • 1/8" heat shrink tubing (aglets)

Chemise/Drawers:

  • white cotton
  • seafoam green ribbon (drawstring)
  • silver hooks and eyes
  • white cotton thread

Corset:

  • white satin fashion fabric
  • white coutil interfacing
  • white cotton lining
  • 1/2" spring steel bones
  • 12" standard busk
  • white lacing
  • 00 stainless steel grommets
  • grosgrain wasit tape ribbon
  • white cotton thread

Hoop skirt:

  • red mystery fabric (I don't remember what it is)
  • white grosgrain ribbon
  • hoop steel
  • tiny grommets (not sure of the size)
  • electrical tape
  • white yarn

...yeah, the hoopskirt is a bit non-standard
