- Presentation Topic: Blazing a Trail to Mining Value-Chain Optimization through Automated Drill & Blast Design Processes
- Abstract: In hard rock mining, drill-and-blast is the prevailing practice used to break down large volumes of rock mass into smaller fractions suitable for subsequent processing stages. The extent of blast fragmentation plays a crucial role in downstream activity efficiency and has a substantial impact on mining profitability. In generating the desired muck-pile size distribution and adhering to safety and regulatory constraints, design parameters must be optimized to suit rock mass properties. The development of such value-driven design strategies is a challenging task, particularly when time constraints are critical. Although the mining industry has access to a range of technologies for process optimization through scenario analysis, their effectiveness depends on their ability to address everyday challenges, account for uncertainties, and adhere to mine schedules.
The GEOVIA Automated Drill & Blast design optimisation is a sophisticated solution based on SIMULIA modelling and simulation technology that continuously helps mining companies improve their practices by automating the design and optimization processes. The console determines the optimal design parameters by automatically executing and evaluating the resulting design space while adhering to specified constraints. Additionally, it assists with mapping parametric data between process steps and automates multiple simulations, resulting in reduced human errors and accelerated evaluation of feasible scenarios. This technology provides access to powerful execution engines such as Design of Experiments (DOE), Optimisation, Approximation, Monte Carlo Six Sigma, Target Solver, and Data matching. It is also compatible with Excel™, MATLAB®, COM, Text I/O apps, Java, and Python scripting, enabling the incorporation of sophisticated models into the system.
The GEOVIA Automated Drill & Blast design optimisation offers significant benefits for mining companies, including time and cost savings. Depending on the required level of sophistication for a particular operation, the console's capabilities can be customized and extended. The key objective of developing such a console was to enable mining engineers and operators to simulate various mining scenarios, from the feasibility phase to the production phase through a streamlined process. Recognizing the significant influence of blast fragmentation on downstream process efficiency, this presentation emphasizes the use of constraint-based optimization techniques enabled through Automated Drill & Blast Design Processes.
About the ISEE:
The story began in 1974 when our founders met at a Sheraton Motor Inn in Pittsburgh to discuss the needs of the explosives industry. What came out of that meeting was a clear goal on how to help push the explosives industry forward while becoming a champion for the blaster in the field. Our mission is just a few simple words but couldn’t be more complex: To advance the science and art of explosives engineering.
After nearly 40 years with this goal in our sights, we’ve been able to accomplish a lot. We’ve got a foothold in more than 90 countries, bringing together more than 4,000 professionals in the explosives industry from all around the globe. We’ve helped launch 42 local ISEE chapters and started education initiatives. Most importantly, we’ve become a voice for the entire industry, bridging the gap between blasters and homeowners and lobbying governments for change.
