How to break out of the Innovation dead zone …
Let’s take traditional visualization; breakthroughs in this domain have been limited as most of the Enterprise needs basic common denominator capabilities such as 2D/3D measurement, MCAD Analysis, ECAD Analysis, Multiple format support, Printing etc. So, how can one to the change the game in this space? How to break the limiting thoughts of traditional capability? How to imagine a new 3D experience when we have been surrounded by the same status quo for years? I have been brainstorming trying to think beyond what we have been “trained” to “think” inside a company which sometime leads to loss of creativity, inventiveness limiting innovation, maybe when we “look” outside we find ideas that spark a breakthrough challenging the status quo. Here are some interesting ideas ….
Idea 1: Leveraging the oncoming explosive advance in device and hardware technology …
User interface technology and mobility technology is accelerating development to new frontiers and vendors such as Corning are creating materials that will enable a completely new way to interact with data … Imagine a day in PLM where the flow of data and 3D merge into an experience that become a natural way for us to create, manage and play …. Wherever one lives, travels and works …. Providing the right info at the right time pervasively through any experience with limited amount of complicated info to confuse us …. Have a look at some of these videos from Corning on new glass technology that leverages IT and presents it to the user in context to their daily lives on any device at any time …. So information comes to us without us having to search for it, imagine a new PLM Experience …

Idea 2: A completely new frontier …. Augmented reality with Social Innovation and Communities
Today, social media started off on the web … but will eventually become a part of our daily life wherever we are … Google’s augmented reality eyewear is coming to disrupt your face and your business model. If you don’t even have to pull your phone out to take a photo, get directions, or message with friends, why would you need to buy the latest iPhone/iPAD or spend so much time on Facebook? Location based technologies integrated with back end processes associated to the user is a wave of productivity technology that will impact all of us in ways that yet we cannot imagine … disruption at it’s best! Now apply this to a social community portal and can you imagine the possibilities and scenarios? It is mindboggling …. A Manager can “look” at a design on the shop floor and get an instant update on the status, who is responsible and any kind of key performance indicator … A shop floor technician can “look” at a part and get all the maintenance history or inventory … An Engineer can “look” at a part on the screen and see all the critical dimensions and specify changes to collaborate with someone in real time …. Sharing all this data with the community and getting feedback from the ecosystem will allow everyone to harness the “hidden” IP of the Enterprise … Now imagine if one had an iPAD or Android device with a PLM application being able to access and experience 3D data directly through the 3D Glasses via a Bluetooth connection …. Or “Looking” at a prototype and one can visualize all the requirements, functional, logical and systems information in real time …. Augmented reality eyewear would enable the 3D Experience using stereoscopic visuals allowing one to use our hands to design, play , share and experience the flow of data and your data comes to life through Augmented reality 3D ….
Who said that seeing a 3D object on a 2D dimensional screen is the cutting edge? That is passé …I got this kind of brainstorming ideas from this video ….

Idea 3: Fully interactive Holographic 3D Design and Mock Up ….
Imagine creating a 3D Design in 3D Space …. Not in a 2D Interface ….. Enjoy this video …
I believe it is these types of ideas that will lead the disruptive technology that are needed to break out of the current paradigm of visualization experiences that are in the dead zone … people will look back and say … “Did we really do it that way for that long?”. Thus, breaking away from the traditional “view” when you are surrounded by the same ideas leads to ideation tunnel vision …. Everything you create has its basis on the same principle and that is why one has to simply shatter the mold … break the glass … walk away … come back and build it again with today’s needs, challenges and trends …. Then you will be ahead of the innovation curve and create products that provide a jump in efficiency to people … and then people will say … “why weren’t we doing this before?” or “heck, why didn’t I think of it?” …. And the cycle will be repeated again …
What do you think?
