Aircraft assembly consists of Drilling holes in parts, and rivetting the holes to join parts.
An aircraft can contain around 100,000 drilled holes or more.
Robots were not widely used for drilling holes in the aircraft manufacturing due to accuracy issues and fixed drilling machines were preferred for this applications.
In a new project Airbus, KUKA, Metris and DELMIA developed a new aerospace grade robotic platform.
The attached document gives the details.
