With the weekend ahead of us, I thought it’s fun to share some tips of interesting movies to watch with robots in it. While working in this business, you probably also have a preference for this genre, like me.
It’s presented in the order of my preference, but of course you might prefer a different order or maybe other films in it. (sorry for any spoiler)
Please leave a comment if you feel another nice robot film should be recommended.
Enjoy!
1. The Terminator (1984)
For many years the robots that threatened mankind in sci-fi movies looked like actual robots. They were made of metal and gears and speaking like machines. But with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the killer cyborg from the future, robots ‘came to live’ and gave us this for some moments terrifying movie.
“l’ll be back”: yes, Schwarzenegger definitely did with the sequels, but this first one was amazing.
2. The Matrix (1999)
The great fear underlying artificial intelligence movies is the notion that after a certain point, the world won’t need us anymore. The Matrix gives that idea one of its most resonant portrayals: In this future, humans are used as batteries for giant robot creatures while their minds are kept busy with a virtual reality play of the world. Thus, it brings together the technological fear inherent in most robot stories with questioning the nature of reality. It really confused me, so I had to watch it again. Years later, this movie is still fantastic and actual: the campaign to stop development of killer robots is fully active.
3. The Stepford Wives (1975 and 2004)
There are two versions of The Stepford Wives, the one I watched is with Nicole Kidman and came out in 2004. This movie is a comedy which in the end turns into a sci-fi movie: the mindless, doting, superficial, immaculately coiffed housewives are, in fact, …
4. WALL-E (2008)
I learned about Wall-E while reading Disney stories to my son. I loved the story and so we watched the Wall-E move together. From its nearly wordless first half, its heartbreaking portrait of an environmentally devastated Earth, to its hilarious slapstick finale: this is one of Pixar’s greatest films. And it’s rare in a film to put a non-humanoid robot at its center, complete with his non-humanoid robot love interest.
5. Star Wars
The cult that has grown around the story of Star Wars is still very strong today. I fell in love with R2D2, a R2 Astromech Droid, who played a significant role in the Skywalker family. But when I wanted to watch all the movies again with my son in the right order, I got really confused in the order of watching this series, the prequels, the original Star Wars trilogy and the sequel trilogy…
6. Star Trek
There are many robot characters in the Star Trek movies, a lot of them became the most popular characters in the movies. Although in the very first series, however, artificial intelligence remained inside a computer and only communicated through a disembodied voice. I loved to watch the series when I was younger, dreaming of life in space and in Starship Enterprise, but I didn’t turn into a Trekkie or Trekker, so I’m not going to say more on this... :-)
