Material and Raw Material Management in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

Mission Statement

Why do we need to separate out material from raw material? Couldn’t we say just “material”?

While the word material may be used when talking about a resource to make something, there are 2 concepts at play – matter and resource. In the 3DEXPERIENCE data model, we want to be sure that we are representing each concept accurately. Having a data type that represents a material, i.e. the matter something is made of, and a different data type to represent the resource item used to make something, we can reuse the material or matter properties across the different products or items that are made of that material regardless of the shape of the resource.

Highlights

The Raw Material (aka Raw Material Specification) is really a combination of the raw material physical product and the material object representing the material the raw material is made of. Properties like the material constituency and for food & beverage products the nutrition and allergens come from the material object. The remaining data (Documents, Alternates, etc.) is managed on the Raw Material object and is similar to what can be found on any other type of Physical Product.

3DEXPERIENCE Solution

In the strategic data model,  we introduced ENOVIA Specification Manager role, Raw Material, which is a subtype of Physical Product (or VPMReference).

On the manufacturing side, DELMIA data model supports Raw Material and "Make from" while generating Manufacturing Items.

Here is the slide deck presented commonly by ENOVIA, BIOVIA & DELMIA in the context of a customer webinar on material and raw material management from design to the manufacturing definition.
