MOM & Sustainability

I wanted share my take-aways on LNS Research's paper on "Next-Gen Sustainability" and also my thoughts on how DELMIA Apriso MOM-solution can contribute in manufacturing sustainability domain.

My key takeaways from LNS’ next-gen sustainability study:

  • Next-gen sustainability needs to be taken from higher-level transformative goals into operations level
  • Sustainability needs to be recognized as a part of other industrial transformation programs (e.g. digital transformation, I4.0 etc.)
  • Sustainability needs to be recognized also as a one type of transformation that impacts people, processes & technology (IT/OT/IIoT/BigData)
  • NYU research found a relationship between corporate sustainability activities and long-term corporate financial performance
  • NYU research: corporations that invested sustainability activities ended up having better innovation processes and risk management capabilities compared to their peers, that didn't invest on sustainability activities)
  • Business value from manufacturing sustainability initiatives typically stacks up from:
    • Operational (and quantifiable) efficiency gains (e.g. reduced waste, resources and energy usage)
    • Strategic (but less quantifiable) gains impacting to companies' stakeholders (e.g. improved corporate risk management)
  • To be successful in sustainability transformation, process standardization will play key role
    • The better standardized processes company has, the higher value (from sustainability initiatives) they can expect
  • What is important to pay attention on for being successful?
    • Sustainability transformation (as other transformations) needs to be well-definedfact-based and clearly communicated to all stakeholders
    • Sustainability targets needs to be aligned with operational performance objectives
    • Chosen systems needs to support achieving above objectives

How DELMIA Apriso MOM-solution fits into this picture?

  • DELMIA Apriso provides flexible manufacturing platform to support industrial transformation in global scale
    • supporting orchestrating shop-floor operations (e2e)
    • supporting enforcing standards (even globally)
    • supporting manufacturing data collection
    • support gaining understanding on manufacturing operational performance
    • supporting converting data into knowledge by putting data into context
      • ..that enables people to make decisions/actions aligned with sustainability goals
  • Those supports achieving operational efficiency gains (e.g. OTD, OEE, NPI etc.)
    • ..and having less scrap, less excess materials, less rework, less administrative work, less un-necessary transportation, lower electricity consumption, less machine breakdowns etc.
  • ..and also  contributes on achieving companies strategic (but maybe less measurable) sustainability benefits
