⚽How We Turned Advanced Machining & Additive Manufacturing into a Physical Story

When complex engineering meets a shared passion like sports, incredible things happen. The DELMIA Machining team wanted to demonstrate the full end-to-end digital thread of our solutions—not just with data on a screen, but with a physical, creative project that brings people together.

The concept? 3D scan our colleagues in their football kit, create high-precision CAD models, machine their figurines, and house them inside a custom 3D-printed soccer ball on a wooden DELMIA display base.

Here is how we bridged the digital and physical worlds:

  •

    Step 1: 3D Scanning & CAD Reconstruction

We captured our player using 3D scanning and thanks to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, we converted the point cloud into a clean, watertight, machinable CAD solid.

  •

Step 2: Precision Machining with DELMIA Machining

Partnering with ERPRO, we defined optimized toolpaths, ran collision simulations, and tackled complex geometries (face, equipment, fine details) to achieve a flawless surface finish straight off the machine.

Step 3: Engineering Design & Assembly Strategy

In collaboration with the Dassault Systèmes FabLab, we solved the challenge of designing a two-part 3D-printed sphere that fits together seamlessly while concealing the parting line.

Step 4: Advanced Additive Manufacturing

Using specialized powder bed fusion techniques thanks to our partner ERPRO, we produced a ultra-smooth ball structure requiring minimal post-processing, highlighting how smart material selection elevates final product quality.

We are currently producing several pieces of the soccer ball. Keep an eye out for this centerpiece at upcoming event booths and tradeshows!

A massive thank you to our partners at ERPRO, the Vélizy FabLab, and our DELMIA Machining teams for bringing this project to life!
