Let’s start at the beginning. You’ve got a shop floor manager that is having issues with throughput – they want better results, and the sooner the better. Along comes someone like me – a business consultant – and they ask if I can recommend anything that will help them to reach their goals. “Of course I can” is my typical response – but not right away. First off, I will ask them what their immediate pain points and issues are. Because many issues that happen are merely symptoms of other problems – and the solution may not be apparent.

Take our shop floor manager that has throughput issues. Are they caused by downtime? Insufficient material availability? Quality issues? Resource availability? Poor plan? Bad execution? Those are just some of the typical impediments in the way of throughput.

The best way forward is to start to understand the issues that may be causing the poor end result. And that means someone like me actually seeing what’s going on, talking to people, and doing an objective assessment. Then we can figure out a reasonable path forward.
