I liked a recent question in the community on a honeycomb pattern on a sphere.
I do believe it is done through a stereographic projection of a hexagonal grid located on the base of the dome. I hope for the confirmation or whatever.
then I recalled a classic which is when the grid is on the pole of the dome. the dome is updside down, then it could be a vase or a night lamp. I saw it with square pattern but not hexagonal pattern
Here is my model for a recall on stereographic projection and spherical geometry
Make the base grid (flat grid)
optional, center the grid so that the origin is the center of the central hexagon always
scale all the hexagons and split the original grid with them
assemble everything and take the boundary
take all the vertices and middle points of the edges
project them on a dome (with its pole laying on the flat grid).
there is no function for the projection
- line from center of the dome to all the points
- intersection of the line with the dome
make a circle arc with the points from the same origin edge. the trick is from euclidean to spherical geometry, a segment is transformed into a circle.
assemble the arcs and slice the dome with them
thick surface
Why all that?
make a small sphere in centered at the origin and apply a emissive material, then ray tracing
I was wondering about an image of an animal, instead of hexagonal pattern...not sure of the effect
