MBSE for the development of complex products

Published December 22, 2022

Today most of the main product innovations are based on the use of mechanical, electrical, electronic and software components that present manufacturers with challenges not only of a technological nature, but also in terms of compliance with regulations and industry standards. Managing complexity, optimizing performance and ensuring product safety are just some of the requirements that professionals must meet to increase company competitiveness and keep up with the times. The Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) approach, based on Dassault Systèmes' integrated environment for simplifying the management of product complexity in the development process, responds to this need and contributes to the creation of products with a high level of security and of efficiency. Through modeling and simulation activities, a functional virtual twin of the system is defined which allows validation actions to be performed right from the initial stages of the project, improving the understanding of the expected behavior of the system, its quality and reducing the time-to-market.

A look at Model-Based Systems Engineering

The Model-Based Systems Engineering methodology, consolidated for years in the aerospace, transport and mobility fields, is starting to be adopted in all industrial fields, from high tech to the construction of industrial plants and machinery. The MBSE uses a standardized graphical language (SysML) capable of simplifying the definition of problems and identifying possible solutions. The use of a common interdisciplinary language - both internally and externally - allows all parties interested in the project to share information on the systems, to have a more complete and exhaustive representation, to reduce errors by fully exploiting the advantages of digital continuity and of the collaboration.

The MBSE aims to address industry issues and align organizations with current and future trends. Whether improving an existing practice or applying the MBSE approach to a new program, the first step is to examine the current design environment to identify inefficiencies and fix them. System designers rely on Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform to enable the MBSE methodology. Based on a consistent set of model representations of the complete system, the MBSE supports all phases of product development, such as requirements management and system design, analysis, verification and validation.

The MBSE in the automotive sector: the Bosch Car Multimedia case

Today's automotive industry is experiencing an unprecedented revolution, dictated by a high level of 'electrification' and autonomous driving. Precisely this sector is drawing great benefits from the MBSE approach: the main challenge concerns the massive simulation of multiple elements, such as car dynamics, sensors, traffic models and much more, without compromising in terms of innovation and vehicle sustainability.

Leveraging CATIA, the CAD design environment, on Dassault Systèmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform, combined with simulation and fully collaborative project management capabilities, provides an efficient approach to developing new electric vehicles. One example is Bosch Car Multimedia's use of the MBSE approach on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to efficiently connect each discipline in product development.

The systemic approach to take modeling to the next level

An important achievement by Dassault Systèmes has been to take modeling beyond the traditional focus on hardware, a shift from products to “experiences” capable of breaking down the silos between hardware and software. An approach that has allowed to attract different types of customers who have taken advantage of the Dassault Systèmes solution to improve the customer experience.

There are many fields of application that can benefit from MBSE and systems engineering. The CATIA solution based on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is now successfully used in the aerospace, automotive, marine, energy, high tech and medical industries. Thanks to the MBSE approach, it is possible to resolve most of the problems in advance, as well as make the right decisions in the initial stages of the development process, reducing risks and costs, and enabling design processes in step with increasingly innovative and complex products that focus the consumer experience.
