BIOVIA Materials Science & Engineering Fellow, Dr. @FH, our Ambassador, Dr. Simon Podkolzin and colleagues developed the design of efficient catalysts for upgrading biomass-derived hydrocarbons into transportation fuels and chemical feedstock.
Their work shows how a novel catalyst made from a particular combination of platinum and molybdenum is highly effective in performing an essential step when turning biomass into biofuel. It can remove strongly bound oxygen molecules from the feedstock while keeping intact the much weaker carbon-carbon bonds that make up the chain molecules required for fuel applications.
