As of BIOVIA Direct version 2017, the installation of BIOVIA Direct requires the configuration of a distinct Oracle extproc listener. This approach allows the parallel execution of multiple BIOVIA Direct versions, and avoids potential interferences of BIOVIA Direct with existing listener or extproc configurations. 

If in your environment you only want to run one version of BIOVIA Direct at a time, and if you do not run other applications that require the Oracle External Procedure Agent, you might consider a modified installation procedure for BIOVIA Direct. It omits the configuration of a distinct Oracle extproc listener but rather adds Direct-specific entries to Oracle’s extproc.ora file.
