World Ocean Day

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of the earth’s biodiversity and it is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

Therefore on June 8th, we are celebrating World Ocean Day!

“The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” is the theme for World Ocean Day 2021, as well as a declaration of intentions that launches a decade of challenges to get the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources”, by 2030

In the following video, we explore the stories of two innovators, EEL Energy & Green Turtle, drawing inspiration from marine life to produce green energy, and to clean up floating plastic in the ocean.

Far from being isolated examples, these two innovations respond to a growing need to embed sustainability in design and learn from nature to become more efficient in our use of limited resources.

EEL Energy has developed an undulating membrane inspired by bio-mimicry  - the motion made by fish swimming – to generate electricity from marine or river currents..

The Green Turtle foundation, aims to clean the oceans of plastic trash. Harbors need to be cleaned and a robot could easily do it. But this robot is uncommon, as it is going to swim and to behave like a turtle
