The basic design of tapered roller bearings is similar to an inner ring bearing. However, tapered roller bearings have tapered outer ring raceways and tapered rollers located between them, and the two raceway layers have different depths. These bearings are adequate in that they can handle both axial and radial loads, unlike other bearings that can only handle radial or axial loads.
The two material layers have different compositions. The inner ring layer has a thin steel layer, while the outer ring layer has a medium density fiberboard layer. The material is layered to change the spindle's center pivot point and help create an effective flow field.
