Project pitch (Text)
The present project carries out a meaningful solution to reduce the carbon footprint generated by the automobile industry. It consists on implementing a diesel to hydrogen conversion kit to replace the pollutant diesel combustion engines into environmentally friendly engines with nearly zero contaminant products.
The developed product meets most of the requirements to replace the injection of diesel for hydrogen: a hydrogen recepting device, a type IV hydrogen tank with a impact protection layer, a TPRD system, a dosing valve system and a new specific control unit connected to all the electronic elements. The electrical energy comes directly from the car battery (not shown in the drawing) and it is adapted by a DC DC direct converter (purple box). The heat waste energy is removed by a thin metal heat sink coupled in one of the sides of the specific control unit (green box).
In the design process the scope was always to replace as few parts as possible. Through the fact that hydrogen is stored under high-pressure, it was not possible to keep the same tank. Also all the pipes transporting normal gas in a car had to be replaced to make it safe while operating with hydrogen.
In the end, what the team tried to develop was a feasible and short term solution for the CO2 emissions in a heavy pollutant industry such as the automation.
