Pitch:
The impact of plastic on the environment: Plastic is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The production and disposal of plastic results in the release of significant amounts of carbon dioxide and methane, contributing to global warming. In addition, plastic waste is a significant source of pollution, with plastic particles and fibers found in oceans, rivers, and even tap water. Plastic also harms wildlife, with many animals becoming entangled in plastic or ingesting plastic particles.
In 2019, the CIEL estimated that production and incineration of plastic would add 850 million metric tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere – equivalent to 189 coal-fired power plants. By 2050 this could rise to 2.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year – or 615 coal plants’ worth.
The problem: Plastic pollution is a major environmental issue, with half of all plastic produced being designed for single-use and disposal. This includes toothbrushes, with most people using plastic toothbrushes for an average of 3 months before throwing them away.
The solution: Our team has developed a fully biodegradable toothbrush made from coir fiber and biodegradable resin. This toothbrush is a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic toothbrushes, and it is designed to degrade naturally without causing harm to the environment.
