Coral reefs are home to around 25% of the total marine population, consuming only 1% of the habitat. But sadly due to the rise in pollution and drastic climate degradation, the situation of corals are in an alarming situation.
We want to tackle the problem of depleting the population of coral reefs in marine habitats for various reasons.
From research, we found that there are around 5,610 species of corals out of which around 232 are endangered with extinction. Various Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been developed throughout the world but they can attend about 10-32% of the overall coral population. Even out of that 32%, 22% are allowed for extractive purposes.
SOLUTION
HOW DOES YOUR SOLUTION ADDRESS THE PROBLEM IDENTIFIED?
We deduced that to protect the sea corals we need to create an artificial ecosystem for them that not only provides them with a habitable space but also a controlled environment without the conditions that led to their culmination.
HOW IS IT INNOVATIVE?
There were organizations which bring forth the idea of artificial coral reefs, however, the idea of an intelligent coral reef that runs on sustainable and renewable energy would be a kick-start to innovate further under this aspect.
