Student Share | Use of Systems Engineering and VR in Capstone Projects

Hello everyone!

I am Guru Kiran Prabhu, undergraduate student of BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore, studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

I got to know about the 3DExperience Platform when I volunteered to participate in the Dassault Systemes La Fondation sponsored project that aimed to create a Virtual Reality Lab for studying electrical machines. I was introduced to the platform formally by my professors. We visited the 3DS Pune office where we learnt the basics of RFLP and the Behavior Modelling app. I also learnt the basics of VR content creation using 3DExcite applications. We returned to college and I was assigned the task of creating the Dymola simulation of 3 phase induction motor, using RFLP to integrate it to the CAD model developed by my mechanical engineering team mates and finally integrating the entire work into a VR experience in 3DExcite.

I started off by using the courses in the PLEXP and 3DExperience Edu to understand the required applications in greater detail. The 3DSwym community also proved to be a great help when I encountered problems.

Initially, the Dymola electrical simulation was done for the motor for different loads. The CAD model developed by mechanical team was integrated through physical node of RFLP. The kinematics mechanism was integrated into Dymola simulation.

The CAD model using CATIA, results of Systems Engineering in Dymola, thermal simulation done in Simulia were imported into 3DExcite Creative Experience. Animation story was written in Natural language and various behaviors (rotate, explode, hide etc.) were added to imported objects. Three buttons (called as VR hotspots) were created to launch and interact with the animation in VR.

There were periodic reviews with my professors and 3DS mentors throughout the project. Even though the Covid-19 pandemic hit the final stages of the project, the HTC Vive VR headset integration was done successfully and entire project was completed in a year.

In spite of the remote working conditions, the mentors, my colleagues and I were easily able to collaborate using the 3DExperience Cloud to exchange files and data. Well-organized learning material, which helped right from installing of the platform, to executing examples that illustrate the RFLP data model, virtual reality experiences, etc. streamlined the execution. This was a truly wonderful 3D experience!

I also took part in the VLABS project of Dassault Systemes that involved the use of Dymola for creating simulations pertaining to different engineering disciplines to give students an understanding of their domain. In this project, I created the Dymola simulations of Electric Drives. The simulations involved DC-DC converters, DC and AC motors, Closed loop control etc.

I participated in the Drone-a-thon event of Dassault Systemes as a part of a team from BMSCE. We participated under Agriculture topic and designed a drone named Kisan Mithra. The proposed solution was to use the drone for health monitoring of the livestock. My task was the creation of the systems engineering for drone in RFLP, simulate the drone and required converter in Behavior Modelling app and render animations of drone in Creative Experience app. Our team made it to the final Top 5.

I gained my first corporate exposure and valuable experience through these projects. The knowledge gained in these projects helped me in all the projects that followed. It also added a lot of value to my resume and helped me in my placement interviews.
